A new online program is setto give Albertans the toolsneeded to build a healthyworkplace.
The Healthier TogetherWorkplace program launchesin October. It’s a free, practicalonline program with easy-to-use tools and resourcesfor creating a healthierworkplace. It’s designedto dovetail with existingoccupational health and safetyprograms to help workplacescreate conditions that helpemployees be healthier.
And it’s timely. New
provincial laws require
companies to have joint
health and safety committees
if they have 20 or more
Together Workplace will
help employers build health
and safety committees, and
do things that are shown to
improve people’s health.
It will “meet workplaceswhere they are” withthree different levels ofachievement.
A personalized dashboardlets organizations monitortheir progress and workat their own pace. Usersare guided through a five-step process (see page 32),and links provide all theinformation needed. Onceorganizations complete theprogram, they can apply forrecognition from AlbertaHealth Services as anemployer of choice.
Why is building a healthyworkplace so important?
Well, a large part of ourhealth is determined bywhere we live, work, play andlearn. We spend about 44 percent of our waking hours atwork.
This makes the workplace agreat place to promote goodhealth, whether it’s dealingwith stress, physical activity orhealthy eating, says Lisa AllenScott, a senior scientist withthe Alberta Cancer PreventionLegacy Fund, part of AlbertaHealth Services.
