Mayfair Diagnostics provides on-site ultrasounds for
Calgary Stampeders home games, using an ultrasound
probe connected to a laptop to quickly determine if an
injured football player can return to the game.
Known as musculoskeletal (MSK) ultrasounds, these
specialized exams aren’t reserved only for pro athletes.
They can be used to examine anyone with a joint or muscle
During an MSK ultrasound, a specially trained
technologist takes images of muscles, ligaments, nerves
and soft tissues in the area of concern. The images are then
reviewed by an MSK specialized radiologist.
“An MSK ultrasound is ideal for problems such as rotator
cuff tears and muscle strains,” says Dr. Sarah Koles, a
specialized MSK radiologist with Mayfair Diagnostics. “It’s
a great tool to determine how severe an injury is, and to
decide if more testing is needed or if a surgical referral is
Ultrasound imaging uses high frequency sound waves
transmitted through a hand-held device to examine the
body’s “soft” parts: the organs, tissues and blood vessels.
It cannot see through bone, so it’s sometimes used
along with X-ray imaging, which uses a small amount of
radiation to see your “hard” parts: the bones and the joint
space between them.
Koles explains that the “in-person, interactive” aspects
of MSK ultrasound allow a patient to work with the
technologist to better identify the site of symptoms. For
example, a patient with plantar fasciitis can point to exactly
where the foot pain is, and the technologist can scan that
area to see if the plantar fascia has a tear or is thickened.
The patient’s sore foot can also be compared to his or her
Once the problem is identified, the patient and their
doctor can review the treatment options, which may include
a steroid injection directed into the correct location under
ultrasound imaging. “In real time, we direct the needle tip
into a precise location, rather than by feel,” Koles says.
She says an MSK ultrasound can help provide an accurate
and timely diagnosis, direct treatment and save healthcare
dollars. “Ultrasound is as good as an MRI for many soft-tissue problems. This helps to free up MRI appointments
for other patients with issues like brain tumours and back
problems that are best detected by an MRI.”
MSK ultrasound gets people on their feet—and back into
the game of life.
