As the head of Alberta Health Services’ web team,
most of my working day is spent in the digital world.
Escaping that world is a daily mission, especially as
winter settles in. Lots of people may be content to put on
an extra pair of socks, settle in with a hot cup of cocoa and
grumble about the weather.
I beat the winter blahs by going outside, moving and
breathing deeply. You really can’t have too much fresh air
in the winter, whether you’re walking into work or skiing
in the mountains.
Winter can be more enjoyable when you try getting
outside every couple of days a week for 10 to 30 minutes at
a time. Shovel the walk. Shovel the neighbour’s walk. Look
for birds, stars or big snowdrifts.
Walk the kids to and from school if you can. Put on a
pair of skates, skis or snowshoes. Slide, glide and embrace
the season. And share it with family and friends. Trust me.
In this issue of Apple, you’ll find lots more advice and
tips about getting outside (see [Fun] Winter Wisdom
on page 38) and appreciating fresh air (see The Air We
Breathe on page 45). On the next page, you’ll find Stay on
Your Feet with the Penguin Walk, a topic that originated
on AHS’s website ( ahs.ca) and is one of our most popular
Like Apple, AHS’s website is filled with health and
wellness information: we have more than 10,000 pages of
content. In November, our web team launched a complete
redesign of the site including how it works on your mobile
It’s now easier to find the information you’re looking
for, whether it’s programs and services, emergency
department wait times or where to find continuing care
services in your community. Check it out—it’s worth a
visit. And because our business is about taking advice as
much as it is about giving advice, we’d appreciate your
feedback and comments. You can drop us an email at
