Setting goals helps dreams come true
Whether it’s reaching retirement, achieving good
health, gaining financial stability or making any other
desire come true, having a realistic plan to get there is fun,
challenging and rewarding. And with a plan, you’re more
likely to fulfil your dreams.
Marty Park, president of Calgary-based Evolve Business
Group, likens living life without a plan to a ship leaving
harbour without a destination.
“Everyone is a sailor guiding their own life, with all of the
responsibility and opportunity to choose to accomplish goals
and fully engage in the experience,” he says. “Otherwise
you just float along, a victim of currents, winds and other

“If your heart is beating, you can create the life you want,”
she says. “The foundation of effective goal-setting is being
true to who you are. Goals are unique for each person;
they’re not necessarily some dramatic splash in the world.

Park recalls a client whose goal was to take a three-week
vacation, yet he had no destination in mind and no idea of
where to begin.
“I advised him to tackle his goal in steps: find a travel
agent; do research and pick three destinations; figure out
when and how much; choose a destination,” Park recounts.
“Everything was concrete and tangible and within six weeks,
we had a budget, destination and timeline.”
Achieving a goal is not only about where you arrive.
“It’s about who you become in the process,” Wiltzen says.
She adds that when you set goals “you take risks and big
actions that draw on all of your skills and courage. You
