There’s a direct link between povertyand mental health. Also fundamentalto wellness are nutrition and activity inschools.
In terms of our health-care system,we need to talk more about health andwellness.

Wellness includes intellectual, emotional and physical health.
On the emotional side, if someonecan’t sleep because he is worried, it willaffect his wellness and his ability tofunction.
Intellectual wellness has nothingto do with your IQ. It is the ability tocognitively think things through toorganize and steer yourself though theday.
The environment plays a role inwellness. Air pollution and noisepollution, or a sense of uneasebecause you are living in an unsafeneighbourhood, all have a negativeinfluence on wellness.
At AHS, our role in wellness includes
influencing various sectors to create
appropriate social and environmental
conditions so people can experience
a sense of wellness. For example, we
advocate for good road systems that
help reduce collisions, we support
people who want to quit smoking and
we’re working to offer healthier food
choices in our facilities for patients, staff

Wellness revolves around childrenhaving the best possible start in life.Children become adults and their earlyexperience makes or breaks their healthand wellness as adults.
Wellness is a societal responsibility. If children receive parental support asthey develop, as adults they will havethe best chance of living with goodmental and physical health and havinghealthy relationships that positivelycontribute to their sense of self, well-being and productivity as citizens. Not surprisingly, they are also moreprepared to be supportive parents totheir own children.
To have healthy individuals in society,we need to value and support the role ofparents in raising the next generation. We need to understand and supportparents’ importance in the health ofchildren—society’s future workforceand source of economic prosperity. All we have is our children and if wedon’t support parents, we hurt our ownsociety.

My personal definition of wellness isabout achieving the right balance in myphysical, emotional, social, spiritual andfinancial health.
Giving people hope is the main drivingforce behind wellness.
When people work as one community,it gives them hope for the future andallows them to press through the toughtimes. They have a purpose as anindividual in a family and as part of acommunity. That’s part of wellness.
Wellness is not just about feedingchildren in Haiti. It’s about givingthem an education so they see theyhave a future and giving their livesmeaning beyond mere survival. Itmeans providing gainful employmentfor people and not just giving them foodor medicine. Then they have somethingto live for.
To ask people to give of themselvesprovides a sense that they are neededand also supports wellness. I feel betterin my wellness when I can help.
