alcoholism was a symptom of something
bigger and more haunting in his life. He
did not choose to die by the bottle, but in
the final year of his life he was powerless
to fight it any longer.
More than anything, I learned change
is possible, and that by sharing the story
of the brain with Albertans, we can
help them better understand the roots
Since our first brain issue in September
2012, the Palix Foundation and Apple
have continued to tell the story of the
brain. We have jointly produced and
reprinted special issues that have reached
more than one million Albertans.
Our magazines have also been shared
with people around the world, including
the producers of the children's educational
TV show, Sesame Street, and leaders in
other towns, cities, counties, provinces
and states who want to change people’s
understanding of the brain in their
communities. One of our most touching
requests was from a man who lived in a
remote Alberta community and wanted to
share the magazine with everyone there.
He and hundreds of other people
who’ve contacted us about Apple's brain
content have inspired us to keep learning
and telling the story of the brain.
The brain story is so powerful that it’s
now also being told through a 30-hour
course offered by the Palix Foundation.
The course is free and available to
anyone; see the ad on page 1. More than
15,000 people around the globe have
enrolled in the online course. Some
10,000 of them are Albertans. The course
is a distillation of the best in scientific
knowledge and meant for anyone with
an interest in learning more about the
brain’s role and influence on health.
Taking it might just be among the most
important work you ever do. |a
