Mayfair Diagnostics’ new GE Senographe Pristina Dueta
mammography system makes mammograms shorter and
A mammogram—an X-ray that looks for abnormalities
in breast tissue—is the “gold standard” for breast cancer
screening, says Katie Kaminski, the mammography
coordinator at Mayfair Diagnostics.
“Early detection is the key in treating and beating breast
cancer,” Kaminski says. “It’s a quick and easy way to get a
clear picture of the breast and determine subtle changes to
it from year to year.”
Some women avoid mammograms because they fear the
discomfort that can be experienced during the procedure.
With the Pristina Dueta, women stand comfortably and
the machine’s rounded corners conform to the body. The
machine is also faster, compressing the breast for less
time, but its greatest advance is what’s called patient-assisted compression.
Once a technologist correctly positions a patient, the
patient can choose to use a handheld remote to adjust the
compression. The technologist supervises and the patient
controls how much more (or less) pressure is applied.
“We find patients apply more compression,” Kaminski
says. “It’s like pinching yourself; it hurts less than if
someone else were to do it.”
The more relaxed the patient, the easier to position
and compress the breast, resulting in less radiation and a
Breast cancer screening varies among woman,
depending on age, risk factors and breast density.
Women who’ve had breast cancer or have a first-degree
relative (parent, sibling or child) with breast cancer are
recommended to have yearly screening.
Dense breasts have less fatty tissue, more fibrous
connective tissue and a higher risk of cancer. Fatty tissue
appears dark on a mammogram while both abnormalities
and fibrous tissue appear white, making abnormalities
harder to find. About 40 per cent of women have dense
tissue in part or nearly all their breasts. They often benefit
from regular mammograms plus ultrasound screening.
With a family history of breast cancer, Amanda MacKay
had her first mammogram at age 40 on a standard breast-imaging machine. Her second was on the Pristina Dueta.
“The technician isn’t in charge of knowing where your
pain tolerance is,” MacKay says. “This is new technology
that works around you, rather than you working around it.”
Mayfair Diagnostics offers the Pristina Dueta at its Southcentre and
Mayfair Place sites, and its new clinic in Mahogany, opening fall 2018.
