Are you young at heart?
You could be 30 and your heart could
be 45. How you eat, move and live,
along with other lifestyle factors, can
age your heart and increase your risk
of cardiovascular disease.
Now you can find out your heart’s
age with Alberta Health Services’ new
heart disease risk calculator (find it on
MyHealth.Alberta.ca). It tallies your
risk of heart attack or stroke based
on your age, gender, blood pressure
and cholesterol, history of diabetes
and history of tobacco use.
“It’s a real number that really wakes
you up,” says Carolyn Walker, senior
advisor of Knowledge Translation with
the provincewide Cardiovascular and
Stroke Strategic Clinical Network.
“You will want to take action by
seeing a health-care professional,”
she says, if your risk is more than
nine per cent.
