In Memoriam:Cyril (Cy) B. frankAug. 3, 1949 - March 5, 2015
On March 5, 2015, Dr. Cy Frank, president andCEO of Alberta Innovates – Health Solutions(AIHS), died suddenly at the age of 65.
Dr. Frank was a true leader in everysense of the word in that his mission was toserve others. He did this in so many ways:as a surgeon who healed, as a renownedresearcher who made discoveries and movedthem into therapies and tools to improvepeople’s lives, and as a brilliant visionary whosaw a clear path to transform Alberta’s healthsystem. AIHS board and staff knew him tobe an inspiring, empathetic and wise leaderdedicated to improving the health and well-being of all Albertans.
In addition to his many appointments andcommitments, Dr. Frank practised kneesurgery in Calgary. His long-standing researchinterest was in knee ligaments, and his studiesof osteoarthritis spanned from the benchto the bedside. Recent honours include theKillam research leadership award in 2012, theQueen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal and the Orderof the University of Calgary in 2013. In 2014,Dr. Frank was named a Member of the Orderof Canada for his contributions to advancingorthopedic health-care services in Alberta andfor his scientific contributions to bone and jointrepair research.
Dr. Frank leaves a legacy and a vision thatwill continue in the many people he inspired.He will be greatly missed.
