Cyril (Cy) B. frank
Aug. 3, 1949 - March 5, 2015
On March 5, 2015, Dr. Cy Frank, president and
CEO of Alberta Innovates – Health Solutions
(AIHS), died suddenly at the age of 65.
Dr. Frank was a true leader in every
sense of the word in that his mission was to
serve others. He did this in so many ways:
as a surgeon who healed, as a renowned
researcher who made discoveries and moved
them into therapies and tools to improve
people’s lives, and as a brilliant visionary who
saw a clear path to transform Alberta’s health
system. AIHS board and staff knew him to
be an inspiring, empathetic and wise leader
dedicated to improving the health and well-being of all Albertans.
In addition to his many appointments and
commitments, Dr. Frank practised knee
surgery in Calgary. His long-standing research
interest was in knee ligaments, and his studies
of osteoarthritis spanned from the bench
to the bedside. Recent honours include the
Killam research leadership award in 2012, the
Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal and the Order
of the University of Calgary in 2013. In 2014,
Dr. Frank was named a Member of the Order
of Canada for his contributions to advancing
orthopedic health-care services in Alberta and
for his scientific contributions to bone and joint
Dr. Frank leaves a legacy and a vision that
will continue in the many people he inspired.
He will be greatly missed.
