Nelson, Atomic Red,Purple Haze, White Satin,Bolero and Yellowstone –these names might soundlike paint colours, traveldestinations or even exoticcocktails but they’re allcarrots that grow here inAlberta.
Today’s rainbow ofpurple, red, orange, yellow and whitecarrots all trace theirroots to the elegantlynamed Queen Anne’slace—a tall plant with apale tap root that growsright under our nosesacross Alberta.
Originally fromEurope and Iran, carrots came to NorthAmerica with Europeansettlers.
On average, we eat
about 11,000 carrots
in our lifetime
