For longer than he can remember, it has
been there for him: a cigarette.
When the nicotine molecule latches
onto the nicotine receptors in his brain,
they begin to vibrate. That stimulates
the receptors for the feel-good hormones,
dopamine and serotonin. So for a while,
as the cigarette burns, life seems good.
But it quickly turns to ashes. Tobacco
use is the number one cause of preventable disease, disability and death in
Canada, and cigarette smoking causes
about 30 per cent of cancers in Canada.
Men continue to have higher rates of
smoking than women because historically,
they start early and have been smoking
much longer, says Barb Borkent, a
program specialist in tobacco for The
Lung Association, Alberta and NWT.
It’s still more socially acceptable for
men to smoke than women.
Many men smoke to forge a strong
self-image but don’t recognize cigarettes
can be deadly, smoking guns.
“If you can understand his triggers,
you can understand how you might be
able to help him when he is ready to stop
smoking,” she says. “It is good
to be there and be supportive, and find
alternatives. If he’s doing an activity
where he can’t smoke, encourage him.”
For some guys, alcohol is a trigger to
smoke a cigarette, or even just getting
together with his friends, she says. Some
like a smoke with their cup of coffee
in the car or taking a break at work. A
stressful event can cause him to light up.

The first step in men’s weight loss is
to learn the amount of food to eat, as
outlined in Eating Well with Canada’s Food
Guide. Prepare heart-healthy foods lower
in saturated fats, cholesterol and salt.
Have a physical activity that fits with
your lifestyle and you can enjoy solo
or with friends and family. That way
you will be more likely to do it.
