To capture a picture-perfect image of a sleeping baby for
this issue’s cover, Apple magazine worked with the Early
Childhood Team at Alberta Health Services and recruited
five families for five hours of photos.

MacCraith set up two backdrops in our office’s atrium, while
Katie McGillivray and Leslie Barker of the Early Childhood
Team looked after set design, equipment (two cribs, a bassinet,
a rocking chair, sheets, baby clothes, books and more) plus food
And then we waited for the babies to fall asleep. And waited.
A thousand snapshots later we had about 50 pictures of babies
sleeping. The babies were, for most of the day, far too interested
in what was going on to fall asleep. Luckily, we needed all
kinds of baby pictures and were able to capture dozens for
upcoming issues of Apple and for a variety of materials by
the Early Childhood Team.
We’d like to thank the families who volunteered for our
big bang baby photo shoot. They were, from left to right in

And special thanks to all the people who voted in our first
readers’ choice cover poll. A couple of weeks before Apple went
to press, we posted three cover concepts on our Facebook page
and asked people to select their favourite concept. The winning
concept features Jaxon Stewart, who was also the photo shoot’s
