Weight is a growing problem
in our province: more than 60 per cent
of Alberta adults are overweight or
obese as defined by the body mass
index. And our kids are getting heavier,
too—about 22 per cent of Alberta
children and youth are overweight
Children who carry extra weight
are likely to become heavy adults and
children whose parents carry extra
weight are at higher risk of obesity.
What’s more, only a fraction of Alberta
children get the 60 minutes of physical
activity a day recommended in Canada’s
Physical Activity Guidelines.
