Tips for moving smoothly into a
booster seat
Move your child into a booster seat immediately
after the child safety seat. As your child reaches 40
pounds ( 18 kg), have a booster seat ready.
involve your child in picking out the booster
seat. Booster seats come in many different styles and
colours, so ask your child which ones they prefer. Also,
let your child try sitting in different seats to find the most
comfortable one. Many booster seats also have features
like cup holders that may appeal to your growing child.
discuss why booster seats are important
with your child. Explain that a booster seat is
needed to keep them safe in the car, just like a helmet
for bike riding or hockey. Point out a booster seat allows
them to see out the window and makes the seatbelt
more comfortable.
call booster seats “big kid seats.” Discuss with
your child that booster seats are special seats for big kids.
Be consistent. Don’t drive away until your child is
buckled in, no matter how short the trip. Establish a rule
that the car will only move when everyone is safely buckled
in and then quietly wait until it is done. Also, make sure the
booster seat is used no matter who is driving.
set an example. Buckle up for every trip and make a
point of telling your child that you need to buckle up, too.
how to know when your child no
longer needs a booster
In addition to turning nine and weighing more than 80
pounds ( 36 kg), your child also needs to be able to sit in
the back seat with the lap and shoulder belt buckled. Their
whole back has to touch the back of the seat when sitting
back with their knees bending comfortably at the edge. The
lap portion of the seatbelt needs to ride low across the hips
and touch the tops of the legs, while the shoulder portion of
the belt needs to cross between their neck and arm. your
child should be able to sit comfortably and be able and
willing to remain in this position for the entire trip.
