call booster seats “big kid seats.” Discuss withyour child that booster seats are special seats for big kids.
Be consistent. Don’t drive away until your child isbuckled in, no matter how short the trip. Establish a rulethat the car will only move when everyone is safely buckledin and then quietly wait until it is done. Also, make sure thebooster seat is used no matter who is driving.

how to know when your child no
longer needs a booster
In addition to turning nine and weighing more than 80pounds ( 36 kg), your child also needs to be able to sit inthe back seat with the lap and shoulder belt buckled. Theirwhole back has to touch the back of the seat when sittingback with their knees bending comfortably at the edge. Thelap portion of the seatbelt needs to ride low across the hipsand touch the tops of the legs, while the shoulder portion ofthe belt needs to cross between their neck and arm. yourchild should be able to sit comfortably and be able andwilling to remain in this position for the entire trip.
