In a large American study,
researchers found seniors with strong
social connections were happier
and lived longer than those with
fewer social ties. In fact, the boost in
survival was comparable to quitting
smoking and greater than reducing
other well-known risks to health such
as physical inactivity and obesity.
An Australian study found people
with large networks of good friends
outlived those with the fewest friends
by 22 per cent. And while family ties
