You may reach a point when it’s no longer safe to get behind the wheel. At 75,80 and then every two years after age 80, you need a medical report to renewyour driver’s licence. If the time comes to hang up your keys for good, manycommunity supports and services can help you get to and from where youneed to go.
Many municipalities offer people over 65 a bus pass at a reduced cost. TheCity of Edmonton took this idea a step further with its Seniors on the Goprogram. This course teaches older adults how to make the most of publictransit. Call your municipality or visit their website for more information onpublic transit resources available for older adults.
Community organizations also help seniors run errands, get groceries andgo out.
“There’s a huge demand for our driving service,” says Emma Rudolf, volunteerservices program coordinator for Calgary Seniors’ Resource Society. CSRSvolunteers take older adults on round trips to pick up prescriptions, shop orattend medical appointments.
“Our drivers also act as advocates, making sure followup appointments arebooked and that prescriptions are properly filled,” Rudolf says. Older adultscan meet and get to know volunteer drivers and other passengers.
Contact your local seniors centre to find out about driving services availablein your community. Private services that charge a fee are another option.
