Rehabilitation care helps people

IF YOU NEED A RIDE
You may reach a point when it’s no longer safe to get behind the wheel. At 75,
80 and then every two years after age 80, you need a medical report to renew
your driver’s licence. If the time comes to hang up your keys for good, many
community supports and services can help you get to and from where you
need to go.
Many municipalities offer people over 65 a bus pass at a reduced cost. The
City of Edmonton took this idea a step further with its Seniors on the Go

public transit resources available for older adults.

“There’s a huge demand for our driving service,” says Emma Rudolf, volunteer
services program coordinator for Calgary Seniors’ Resource Society. CSRS
volunteers take older adults on round trips to pick up prescriptions, shop or
attend medical appointments.
“Our drivers also act as advocates, making sure followup appointments are
booked and that prescriptions are properly filled,” Rudolf says. Older adults
can meet and get to know volunteer drivers and other passengers.
Contact your local seniors centre to find out about driving services available
in your community. Private services that charge a fee are another option.
